BABAO Honorary Lifetime Membership 2018

At the 2018 Annual Meeting in Cranfield, BABAO’s first Honorary Lifetime Membership was awarded to Prof Holger Schutkowski.

Holger Schutkowski has been a vital and fundamental part of BABAO since BABAO’s inception 20 years ago. He has served as President and has hosted the conference on several occasions (in two different universities). He is currently Professor of Bioarchaeology at Bournemouth University, and has previously served as Deputy Dean there. Holger has supervised Masters and PhD students both at Bradford and at Bournemouth, with his past PhD students employed in jobs across a range of countries!

Holger arrived at Bournemouth fresh from being Head of Archaeology, Geography & Environmental Sciences at Bradford, where he had been from 2000-2010. Obviously, he will be known to lots of past and current BABAO members for his involvement with the Bradford MSc course and the palaeopathology short courses! Prior to coming to the UK, Holger was a member of staff at the University of Göttingen and had also spent time as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Copenhagen (having completed his PhD in Göttingen in 1990).

Holger’s publications are wide-ranging and extensive, focusing on aspects of assigning age and sex estimates to use of complex isotopic or histological methods of enquiry. In addition to over 40 peer-reviewed journal articles, Holger has one monograph and several edited volumes to his name. These latter two have both pushed the field of bioarchaeology forwards, driving for synthesis and greater nuance to be applied in the analyses of interactions between biological systems and culture. He was also one of the first in Britain to take an explicitly biocultural approach to isotopic studies of human remains. He has been instrumental in synthesising different fields within biological anthropology and archaeology. He has demonstrated that isotopic and histological studies should only and can only exist within the wider bioarchaeological study and are meaningless without the biocultural context. This has been reflected in the policies adopted by Historic England and BABAO itself (e.g. see 2013 “Science and the Dead” guidelines for the destructive sampling of archaeological human remains for scientific analysis).

We can think of no more fitting a recipient of Honorary Lifetime Membership than Professor Holger Schutkowski.
